Ahane GAA : Weekly Notes 24th July 2017

Senior Hurling : Our hard working Seniors have a Senior Hurling Championship match against Kilmallock in the Gaelic Grounds on Sunday next 30th July at 7:30.  The curtain raiser is Patrickswell v Monaleen. As part of the preparation, the team played a useful challenge against O’Callaghan’s Mills on Thursday last – the team is progressing nicely and hopefully are coming good at the right time of season.   The match on Sunday v Kilmallock will be a difficult obstacle and the players would appreciate your support please.

Limerick U21 Hurlers : Good luck to Tom Morrissey who has another fixture in the Gaelic Grounds on Wednesday 26th July at 7:30, when he captains the Limerick U21s in the Munster Final v Cork. The Ahane players and mentors wish you all the best Tom. This is an honour for you, your family and Ahane GAA Club.

Minor Hurling : our Minor Team continued their Premier Minor campaign last Friday in Mackey Park when we lost to Doon by two points. Considering that Doon are undefeated so far this season and that the team were down at least 6 of the usual starting team due to family holidays and injuries, this was a very credible performance. This minor squad continues to train well and improve. Many of the players have now been co-opted onto the Senior and Junior Adult teams.  Training continues on Thursdays and Sunday's.

Junior Hurling : the Junior hurlers had a very successful outing on Saturday last when they overcame a Murroe-Boher outfit in a fine game of hurling.  The Ahane attackers, led by the evergreen Ollie Moran at centre forward, had a very productive hour scoring 3:17 to Murroe-Boher 1:13.  It is also good to see Paul O Connor back in the Green and Gold.  Well done to all.  The team lined out as follows:  Paul O Connor, Alan Doherty, Mike Hayes, Killian Carroll, Tommy Clifford, John Doheny, Sean Feeney, Patrick Minihan, Dion Lynch, Tom Doheny, Ollie Moran, William Brennan, Darragh Connolly, Podge O Connor, Mike Power.  The next outing is Sunday 30th against Caherline in Cappamore at 12:00 and support is welcome.

As Gaeilge : Beidh Cluiche Ceannais Iomána na Mumhan faoi 21 ar siúl Dé Céadaoin I bPáirc na nGael ag 7.30in. Beidh Tom Morrissey mar chaptaen ar fhoireann Luimnigh agus is í Luimneach rogha na coitiantachta. Ach caithfidh siad sár iarracht a chur isteach toisc go bhfuil gach foireann iománaíochta as Corcaigh ar fheabhas I mbliana. Go néirí go geal le Tom agus a fhoireann.  Tosóidh craobh sinsir Luimnigh arís an deireadh seachtaine seo chugainn agus tá cluiche mór ag Atháin v Cill Mocheallóg I bPáirc na nGael ag 7.30 in. Dé Sathairn. Go mbeidh an tádh leo!

U12 :  the U12 hurlers had a busy week last week with a tough challenge game against a strong Holycross Ballycahill team from Tipperary on Monday last in Mackey Park.  This was followed by a league game v Monaleen on Thursday in Mackey Park for the first game of Phase 2 of the U12 hurling league.  The opening exchanges were tight with both sides playing some lovely hurling. After a few points by each team, Monaleen found the Ahane net. Ahane responded with 2 goals from quick ball into the full forward line.  At half time, Ahane were ahead by 2-3 to 1-4. The second half resumed with highly committed play from both teams with points and scores for both sides.  The Ahane team scored their third goal but Monaleen stayed in touch and grabbed a late equalising goal to take a share of the spoils on the night with a final score of 3-5 to 2-8. Well done to the players and especially to James O'M who came up from Kilkee to play on the night.  The players last evening were Ciaran, Kyle, David, Jamie, James, Paddy, Jack, Cathal, Will, Cian, Tadhg, Darragh, Ryan, Sean, John C, James D, Tony, Harry, James R - well done all.  Thank you to U12 Mentor and Bord na nÓg Chairman Brian O'M for agreeing to referee on the night for this competitive local derby.  U12 Football league on Thursday 27th July in Mackey Park v Coishlea Gaels.  The U12 hurlers also take part in a Munster Coaching & Games Blitz on Saturday next 29th July at the Gaelic Grounds.

U14 :  the U14 Hurlers had a hard fought 2 point victory in Round#5 of the U14 Hurling league away in Garryspillane’s GAA pitch in Knocklong on Tuesday last. From an Ahane point of view this was definitely the best all-round hurling performance the squad put in this year with direct, skillful attacking hurling being the order of the day and tenacious hooking and blocking in defense now also becoming a signature trademark of this group. Ahane played with the benefit a strong wind in the first half and the forward line of Gavin C, Liam, Donnacha, Craig, Ciaran C, Will and Sean took full advantage and made great use of the ball they got notching up 4 goals and 5 points to Garryspillane’s 4 goals and 1 point in that 1st half. The challenge after half time of course was to defend the score against that same strong breeze, Ciaran B had his work cut out in goals but was ably assisted by a strong full back line of Colm, Kyle, Gavin R and Stephen while Jack, Evan and John D stuck manfully to their tasks right through the second half which was a time when the center-field duo of Shane and Eddie started to come into their own. Ahane saw it out to the final whistle on a score line of 4-9 to 6-1. Special mention to our U12s who are so much a part of this squad and special mention to Gavin and Shane came up from Kilkee to play their part in tonight’s game. Thanks also to Karen Slattery, Tom O’Neill, Anne-Marie Coulter, Martin McCormack, John Hassett, Denis O’Leary and Joe O’Grady who helped out with transport to the game. As is now the tradition, the victory was followed by a stop off on the way home on Main St., Hospital for Ice-creams.
